A three-day course designed to help participants learn about child loss and grief and the impact this can have on those affected by it. It may be used for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by counsellors, health and social care professionals or anyone engaged in a helping capacity who encounters people affected by the death of a child.
It is also possible to deliver the course off-site to staff teams and, where required, the course content can be adjusted to meet the needs of the host organisation.
The course covers the following topics:
- Theories of grief and how they apply to people affected by the death of a child.
- How the death of a child differs from other bereavements.
- The distinction between ‘normal’ grief reactions and complex grief.
- How the death of a child impacts on those affected at the time and in later life.
- The real-life experience of bereaved parents through the participation of Alder Centre volunteers.
- Course participants own beliefs, feelings and attitudes towards death and dying and how they may affect their ability to support bereaved people.
- Self-care for those providing support to the bereaved.
The course is delivered on one day a week over three weeks. Students receive a certificate of attendance from The Alder Centre.
