Alder Hey is located in the world famous city of Liverpool, in the United Kingdom.
Recognised globally as being the birthplace of the Beatles and home to English Premier League football clubs Everton FC and Liverpool FC, there’s much more to Liverpool than just music and football.
Located on the Mersey River in North West England, Liverpool has a population of over 900,000 and is part of a wider City Region with 1.5 million residents.
Liverpool has one of the largest collections of Grade II-listed buildings outside London and is crowned by its stunning waterfront – incorporating the instantly recognisable ‘Three Graces’: The Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. Alongside them, you’ll find dazzling new buildings of an energised city, along with renovated docklands, all watched over by two unforgettable cathedrals.
Liverpool’s culture and heritage are at the very heart of the city. With its unique attractions, exciting events, world-class sport offerings, unrivalled musical heritage and famously warm welcome, Liverpool is the ideal destination to live and explore. There’s no shortage of things to do, places to go and exciting events to get involved in.
Must-visit sites await such as the Royal Albert Dock and major venues including Tate Liverpool, the Everyman Theatre and the elegant Philharmonic Hall. Walk streets that are lined with architectural masterpieces and experience the special atmosphere of places where history has been made – from the Cavern Club, where The Beatles honed their talent, to Anfield and Goodison Park football stadia, homes to the mighty Liverpool FC and Everton FC respectively.
Liverpool is hugely proud of The Beatles, four local lads who shook the world, and their presence can still be felt in almost every corner of the city. Football is also a source of great pride, and rightly so, regardless of whether you’re Red or Blue!
You will also find almost every form of shopping experience in Liverpool or close by, ranging from large shopping centres with major stores such as Liverpool One or the nearby INTU Trafford Centre to smaller specialist shops and boutiques, or one of Europe’s largest Designer Outlet Villages. Cheshire Oaks, is home to dozens of famous brand outlets.
The city is well-served by public transport and boasts one of Europe’s fastest-growing regional airports. There is an excellent rail service that provides one of the most frequent commuter services outside of London, and the region has a good motorway network with easy access to other major cities and regions.
Looking more widely, the North West offers a mix of highly populated cities including Manchester and historical towns such as Chester, surrounded by large areas of natural beauty and rambling countryside.
Neighbouring Manchester, a thriving city just 50km from Liverpool, has its own claim to musical and footballing fame, being the place where the ‘post punk’ musical movement exploded in the 1980s and 1990s, giving rise to bands such as Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths and The Stone Roses; and is the home of two of football’s world super-clubs, Manchester City and United.
Built on the ancient Roman settlement Deva Victrix, the historic walled city of Chester has a cathedral, with its Gothic architecture and intricate carvings, that is simply stunning. Walk the Roman walls, still standing, and explore Chester’s rich history through its many tourist attractions.
The area to the east of Liverpool provides excellent motorway links to other parts of the country, including the beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Across the River Mersey, lies the Wirral, an area of green open spaces, lovely small villages and suburban towns. The Wirral also has great road and travel links to the beautiful countryside and historic towns of North Wales.
Whatever it is you’re looking for; you’ll find it in Liverpool and the North West.
