The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department has expertise in managing a range of common conditions as well as complex assessments and operations.
Children and young people who undergo day case ENT operations usually go through our dedicated Day Case Unit. ENT inpatients are managed on Ward 3A. The ward is managed by a ward manager, with a team of highly experienced staff nurses. Sometimes, ENT patients are managed in the high dependency ward, intensive care unit or other wards, particularly if they have another condition.
The department has a dedicated tracheostomy nurse specialist who provides advice and support to tracheostomised children and their families, as well as two other ENT nurse specialists. The department provides an emergency service 24/7 and has outpatient clinics and operating theatre sessions every working day.
The ENT department works closely with a number of other departments in order to provide joint care to children and young people who have complex conditions requiring input from other health professionals. We work particularly closely with the Audiology, Respiratory, Craniofacial, Neurosurgical and Allergy Departments.

Research
The progress of all projects is reviewed at the ENT departmental research and development meeting held every month.
Current research projects cover the spectrum of paediatric otolaryngology, including management of drooling and salivary disorders, endoscopic ear surgery, chronic ear disease, hearing rehabilitation options (both surgical and non-surgical), respiratory papillomatosis, exercise induced laryngeal obstruction, chronic rhinosinusitis, management of tracheomalacia.
There are multiple ongoing joint projects with other departments in the hospital including Speech and Language Therapy (voice clinic outcomes), the Cleft Palate Unit, the Craniofacial Unit (use of nasopharyngeal airway in craniosynostosis), the Anaesthetic department (anaesthetic management of paediatric patients undergoing airway endoscopy), as well as projects with other paediatric ENT units around the world (including looking at management of children with recurrent acute otitis media).
The department continues to make contributions to the literature and is well represented at national and international meetings (BAPO, ASPO, Dialogues in Paediatric ENT, RSM, ESPO, SENTAC conferences).
Publications
The consultants and fellows have also written chapters for recently published textbooks in paediatric otolaryngology including Scott-Brown’s Otolaryngology.
In the last year the department has published numerous papers in the peer reviewed literature. You can find some journals in the publications section.
