Liverpool Speech and Language Therapy Service for Deaf Children PIAG 297 (183kB)
Information
Our aim is to provide a specialist Speech and Language Therapy service to children and young people diagnosed with a severe to profound permanent hearing level.
Our role is to advise and support parents and carers whose child or young person has been diagnosed with permanent hearing level.
We can offer ideas and suggestions to help with communication. This can be through spoken language and/or signing.
Who do we see and how is my child referred?
We see children and young people with severe to profound permanent hearing level.
The referral is usually made by the Audiology Team or Teacher of the Deaf.
However, anyone can make a referral, as long as parental consent is obtained and the child is registered with a GP in Cheshire & Merseyside. Your child will be seen within 18 weeks of receipt of the referral.
Where is the service offered?
Children can be seen in a number of locations, which are flexible to meet your needs:
• At home (for very young children)
• Children’s Centre / Mainstream nurseries & schools
• Via digital consultations
• Specialist Deaf Resource Bases in Liverpool
• Community Clinics
First Appointment
This is an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s skills in the following areas:
- their listening skills and use of hearing aids / cochlear implants
- their attention and play
- how they follow instructions
- using words/signs in sentences
- saying sounds & talking clearly.
We work closely with parents and colleagues including:
- Teachers of the Deaf
- Audiology Dept.
- Nursery or school
How we support you and your child
Following the assessment, we will discuss with you the best way to support your child’s listening, speech, language and communication skills. As your child’s skills develop the type of support they receive may also change.
We may agree at this stage your child does not need support at this time and they will be discharged.
Working Together
An effective way of supporting your child is by working together on agreed targets and ideas that can be carried out by everyone involved with them.
The Speech & Language Therapist will work closely with you, Nursery Staff, Teachers, Learning Support Assistants and Sensory Support Staff. A named person should practice the suggested activities on a regular basis.
Some children may benefit from a set number of sessions with a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist to work on your child’s specific targets.
Supporting everyone involved with your child
Formal courses and informal training can be provided to parents, education and support staff and other professionals.
