Welcome to Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust

Alder Hey is England’s first paediatric health promoting hospital accredited by the World Health Organisation.
Alder Hey is one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals, providing care for over 200,000 children each year. In addition to the hospital site, we are present at more than 40 community outreach sites and programmes and our consultants hold 800 clinic sessions each year from Cumbria to Shropshire, helping deliver care closer to home.
We are a top performing Trust, rated ‘Excellent’ by the independent Healthcare Commission for the last seven consecutive years, which puts us in the top 1.8 per cent of Trusts nationally. To achieve this:
- 90 per cent of our admitted patients are now treated within 18 weeks
- 97 per cent of our non-admitted patients are now treated within 18 weeks
- 98 per cent of A&E patients are seen within four hours
- Lowest MRSA infection rates in the north-west of England
- 'Excellent' PEAT score for Cleanliness, Food and Environment
If your child has a sudden fever, cough or shortness of breath or has a headache, sore throat, tiredness, aching muscles, chills, sneezing, runny nose or loss of appetite they may have swine flu.
For most children this is a mild illness and they should start to feel
better after a few days without needing to go to a GP, Walk-in
Centre or Accident and Emergency (A&E).
The best thing you can do is keep your child at home, make sure they get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Over-the-counter flu remedies can also help to relieve symptoms and help your child to feel more comfortable.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD HAS SYMPTOMS
1 If your child feels very unwell
The National Pandemic Flu Service is now available. You can check your child’s symptoms online at www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk or call 0800 1513100. You can also call the Swine Flu information line on 0800 1 513 513
2 Still concerned?
If you have taken these steps and are still concerned call
NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or your GP for more advice.
3 Please do not go to A&E unless your child is seriously ill.
