Introduction
Here at the Burns Unit your child or the child you are legal guardian to may be asked to take part in a research study.
What is Research?
Research is essential in developing better treatments and improving healthcare. Before you decide if you and your child would like to take part in a study it is important to understand why the research is being done and what will be involved.
Potential new treatments may or may not be better than an existing one; research studies are needed to find the best treatment. Studies can evaluate if a new treatment is effective.
All research studies are reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee, to protect the rights, dignity, safety and well-being of the participant. Once identified as a suitable candidate to take part in a particular study we need to obtain your consent. If your child is old enough and they wish to take part they can sign an assent form.
We cannot promise the study will help your child but the information we obtain from it may help treat other patients in the future. We will give you clear information about the study and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have regarding the study.
You will be given time to consider your decision and you will be able to withdraw from the study at a later date if you wish to do so.
All participants will remain anonymous and your child’s treatment will not be affected if you take part in the study or not.
How to get involved
Your child’s Consultant, a Specialist Registrar in the Burns Team or the Research Nurse will discuss the study with you.
You will be given a parent/guardian information, detailing the study. An age appropriate leaflet is also available for your child to read and discuss.
You will have the opportunity to discuss the study with the Doctors and Research Nurse and any questions you have will be answered.
You are given time to decide if you want to take part. If you need to you can discuss it with your family to help you decide.
How To Access Results
Once all the research information/ data has been collected and analysed the results will be written up and be published in a medical journal.
If you would like to be contacted when the study is finished and the results available, please contact the Burn Research Nurse via email.
The results will be published in The research section of the burn page on the Alder Hey website. We can inform you when this is available for you to read the findings.
