We are proud to announce that a number of our colleagues have been awarded the prestigious British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours List released today.

(From top left clockwise) Dr David Wright (Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon), Mr Pundrique Sharma (Consultant Plastic Surgeon), Ms Vitty Bucknall (Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon), Mr Roger Walton (Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon) (bottom left), Dr Katie Misselbrook (Consultant Anaesthetist) (not pictured) have all been recognised for their ‘services to children and young people’.
The King’s Birthday Honours recognise individuals from across the UK who have made outstanding contributions to their communities, professions and public service.
The staff were nominated by the parent of a child treated at Alder Hey during and following the Southport attacks in 2024. The nominations recognised the exceptional care, support and kindness shown by them and the wider response team during that incredibly difficult and tragic time. Following the announcement today, the parent who nominated the individuals shared an open letter to all Alder Hey staff who responded to what happened that day and continue to look after the victims, which you can read below.
“I am immensely proud of our colleagues who have been awarded the British Empire Medal today. This recognition reflects not only their exceptional professionalism and compassion, but also the remarkable efforts of every member of the Alder Hey team who played a part on that tragic day. Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families.” Dame Jo Williams, Chair of Alder Hey
“The courage, skill and humanity shown by our staff in the most difficult of circumstances will never be forgotten. While these honours rightly celebrate the individuals named, they also stand as a tribute to the collective strength, dedication and kindness demonstrated across our organisation.
“We are deeply grateful to the patient’s mum who made the nomination and for the heartfelt words she has shared with our staff. Her message is a powerful reminder of the impact that compassionate care can have, even in the darkest moments. Today’s honours are a testament to the extraordinary people who make Alder Hey what it is.”
The recipients will receive their medals from the Lord-Lieutenant at a ceremony in the coming months.
