PADDINGToN Study – Parent co-Designed Drug Information for parents and Guardians Taking Neonates home
A multicentre study with four sites in the UK and one in Ireland, funded by the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacists Group. Led by a team at Alder Hey: Janet Clark, Rachael Dore, Cara Sutton, Andrea Gill and Dr Louise Bracken (Chief Investigator).
1 in 7 babies born each year in the UK and Ireland are cared for on the neonatal unit. With many discharged on multiple medicines. An impactful presentation from an ex-neonatal parent confirmed our suspicion that better medicine information resources were needed. Rachel described the difficulties encountered with medicine administration post discharge and we quickly recognised this was something that researchers alone could not solve! We invited Rachel and an Irish parent, Julie, to join our PADDINGToN study management group and Team PADDINGToN was formed!
We conducted e-surveys and focus groups with parents and using their feedback we co-design medicine resources with parents from the UK and Ireland. The PADDINGToN resources include general advice, information about common neonatal medicines, a medicines administration record and Frequently Asked Questions and answers.
Feedback from parents who took part in the study:
I also just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to your whole team for this project. Looking through the information has made me reflect on just how helpful I would have found this pack! …. the work you are doing is so important. So thank you” PAD06
Thank you for doing this. It is a great resource. I learnt information from this resource about the medicines given to my boys that no one ever told me so I know these are going to be so valuable to other parents” PAD10
