Child Death Awareness Week takes place from 1st July, providing an opportunity to remember children who have died, raise awareness of the lifelong impact of child loss, and ensure that bereaved families know they are not alone. The week also encourages open conversations about grief and highlights the support available to families, friends and professionals affected by the death of a child.
At Alder Hey, we are proud to support Child Death Awareness Week alongside the Child Death Helpline, helping to raise awareness of the emotional impact of child loss and the importance of compassionate bereavement support.
Child Death Helpline
The Child Death Helpline is a confidential, freephone service for anyone affected by the death of a child of any age, from any cause, and at any time.

The helpline is staffed by trained volunteer bereaved parents who understand the unique experience of losing a child. Support is also available for grandparents, siblings, wider family members, friends and professionals who have been affected by the death of a child.
Based at The Alder Centre at Alder Hey, the helpline offers a compassionate listening ear every day of the year, providing understanding, emotional support and reassurance to those who need it most.
Walk In Our Shoes – National Bereaved Parents Day
As part of National Bereaved Parents Day on Thursday 3rd July, The Alder Centre is supporting the ‘It’s Never You’ charity’s Walk In Our Shoes campaign.
Between 10am and 4pm, a powerful visual display of children’s shoes will be created at The Alder Centre. Each pair of shoes represents a child gone too soon and honours the family whose lives have been forever changed.
How you can take part
You can support the display in one of two ways:
- Bring a pair of children’s shoes to The Alder Centre before 10am on 3rd July and add them to the display.
- Alternatively, drop off a pair of shoes in advance, placed in a bag with your child’s name, and The Alder Centre team will include them in the display on the day.
All shoes can be collected from The Alder Centre after the event.
