Ian was selected from hundreds of nominations from across the UK in recognition of the fantastic care, compassion and advocacy he brings to children with complex medical needs and their families.
He received his award at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on Monday 21 September.
The national WellChild Awards celebrate the inspirational achievements of seriously ill children and young people, alongside the families and professionals who support them.
Ian was nominated by Gill Golden from Merseyside, whose child was under his care during a prolonged and life-threatening hospital stay.
Professor Ian Sinha said:
“For me, this award is really a reflection of what we achieve as a team at Alder Hey. In particular, it’s a chance to reflect on how lucky we are to have such wonderful, caring and skilled nurses across the Trust. In Alison and Flo, we are really fortunate to have WellChild nurses who play such a crucial role in helping families have as normal a life as possible. I am always grateful to the WellChild Charity for supporting them to achieve this.”
Gill described Ian as an exceptional clinician and an extraordinary individual whose kindness, belief and determination gave her family strength when they needed it most.
Alongside his clinical role at Alder Hey, Ian is an Honorary Professor of Child Health at the University of Liverpool and an Honorary Professor of Global Child Health at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
Ian is widely respected for developing innovative multidisciplinary clinics that bring specialists together to provide personalised and coordinated support that meets the needs of children and their families.
His work also extends beyond the hospital. Ian is a passionate advocate for children whose complex needs are compounded by poverty, housing insecurity and social deprivation.
Through research, writing, public speaking and social media, he works to raise awareness of these issues and influence positive change, while always keeping the wellbeing of the child at the heart of his work.
At the ceremony, Ian joined award winners from across the country and spent time with WellChild Patron Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, who attended a reception with the winners and their families.
