Alder Hey has won two awards at this year’s RIBA Awards. Our Catkin Centre and Sunflower House building project won Scheme of the Year, and Alder Hey also won Client of the Year.

For over 50 years, the RIBA Awards have celebrated the best architecture in the UK and around the world, regardless of form, size, or budget.
The panel of judges said of the Catkin and Sunflower House project: “It is hard to overestimate the challenging nature of the project brief, or indeed the amazing work the staff and users of the building undertake. Those that the jury met were full of praise for the way this project enhances the possibilities for a therapeutic environment.”

Our Catkin Centre opened its doors in October 2023. It houses our community and mental health teams and several outpatient clinics.
Sunflower House, adjacent to the Catkin Centre on our hospital campus, is our tier four mental health inpatient unit. It cares for children and young people aged 5 to 13 who have the most challenging mental health conditions. It was opened in May 2023 and replaced the Dewi Jones Unit in Waterloo.
Both projects were part-funded by Alder Hey Children’s Charity through their 7in10 Mental Health Appeal.
