Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has joined three other Liverpool NHS organisations in a new collaboration with KIMS Hospitals and the British Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), creating opportunities to share clinical expertise, develop research and strengthen medical education between the UK and India.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 14 October 2026 during a Liverpool City Council delegation visit to Hyderabad, India.
The collaboration brings together Alder Hey, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group), The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust and The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust with KIMS Hospitals and BIMS.
KIMS Hospitals is a listed Indian healthcare group operating 29 hospitals and more than 8,000 beds across India, providing a broad range of tertiary and quaternary healthcare services. The British Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) is a UK-based institution developing international partnerships across healthcare, education and research.
The partnership aims to establish a platform for long-term clinical and academic collaboration, with a focus on research, medical education, innovation, clinical exchanges and workforce development. It will also explore opportunities for Indian doctors to gain experience within the UK healthcare system and for UK doctors to undertake placements across the KIMS Hospitals network in India, with BIMS supporting the coordination of these opportunities.
For Alder Hey, the agreement represents an opportunity to build on its commitment to sharing specialist children’s healthcare expertise internationally, while learning from partners and exploring new approaches that could benefit children, families and healthcare professionals.
Professor Rafael Guerrero, Congenital Cardiac Surgeon and Director of Alder Hey Global Health, said:
“We are excited to be part of this new collaboration between healthcare organisations in Liverpool and Hyderabad. Alder Hey has a long-standing commitment to sharing specialist children’s healthcare expertise and learning from partners, globally, where that sharing and learning can create meaningful benefits for children, families and our teams.
“This agreement provides an opportunity to explore shared interests with KIMS Hospitals, BIMS and our Liverpool partners, in areas such as education, research, innovation and the exchange of clinical knowledge. We look forward to developing this collaboration and identifying where working together can add genuine value.”
The agreement reflects the participating organisations’ shared ambition to develop meaningful international relationships and identify opportunities for collaboration across healthcare and education. The formal framework will be governed by the MoU and any subsequent institutional agreements. The collaboration brings together organisations with complementary clinical and academic expertise, creating opportunities for teams to share knowledge, explore joint research and support professional development through training, fellowships and exchange programmes.
Dr Bhaskar Rao Bollineni, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Hospitals, said:
“For KIMS Hospitals, this is an important step in building a deeper international partnership with Liverpool. Liverpool brings internationally recognised specialist expertise, while KIMS combines scale and advanced technology with recognised strengths in robotic surgery, transplants and complex tertiary and quaternary care.
“We see great potential through BIMS and our Liverpool partners for joint research, fellowships and the exchange of knowledge between our teams. We want this to become a long-term partnership that creates real benefits for healthcare professionals and ultimately for patients in both countries.”
Dr Sai Pillarisetti, Managing Director of BIMS, said:
“It is exciting to see stronger links developing between Liverpool’s NHS organisations and KIMS Hospitals, bringing together organizations with complementary strengths and shared ambitions. BIMS is delighted to be contributing to that process, helping bridge these relationships and develop practical initiatives that deliver value across both systems. Healthcare has no borders, and stronger UK-India links here can strengthen the broader partnership being built between our two countries.”
The Liverpool delegation’s visit to Hyderabad follows the recently signed UK–India Free Trade Agreement and reflects the wider ambition to strengthen links between the two countries across healthcare, education, research and economic development.
