John joined Alder Hey in April 2017 as Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive. He became Managing Director and Chief Finance Officer in April 2023, having previously served as Interim Chief Executive in 2021/22, and was appointed Chief Executive in November 2024.
He began his career on the National Finance Graduate Trainee Scheme and went on to hold senior roles, including Deputy Director of Performance at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and Deputy Director of Finance at South Manchester University Hospital.
In 2008, John joined The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (RJAH) in Oswestry as Director of Finance, supporting the organisation’s successful Foundation Trust application and strengthening governance and financial sustainability. He became Acting Chief Executive in October 2015 and then Deputy Chief Executive from 1 April 2016, working with teams across the Trust to deliver sustainable improvements for patients and staff.
With nearly 30 years of Board-level experience in the NHS, John is committed to ensuring children, young people and families receive safe, compassionate care and an excellent experience every time they use the Trust’s services. He focuses on improving quality and performance, directing resources where they make the greatest difference, strengthening organisational culture and staff morale, and reducing health inequalities for children and young people.
