Hospital Pharmacists work as part of the clinical team. They are responsible for ensuring that correct medicines are prescribed and dispensed and they support medical and nursing staff in providing treatments to patients.
Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants play a vital role working alongside pharmacists. They prepare and dispense medicines under the supervision of a pharmacist, make up sterile medicines and are responsible for stock control and ordering. Many of our technicians have completed additional training in final accuracy checking.
The pharmacy department is divided into several areas: the dispensary and pharmacy purchasing department, clinical services and near patient pharmacy providing pharmacy services to the wards, medicines information and the Aseptic services unit. We also work closely with the research department to complete clinical trials of medicines for children, making sure that we help to develop new medicines especially for children and for some of the rare childhood illnesses.
We hope that this information helps you to understand what services the pharmacy department provides for the Trust. If you have any questions please ask our staff when you are next collecting a prescription from the dispensary or are staying on or visiting a ward. Alternatively contact the Pharmacy office on 0151 252 5548 who will refer you to someone who can help. We will be happy to give you more information.
