Matalan Superstars campaign total revealed
26th Feb 2019
Matalan Superstars campaign raises an amazing £623k for Alder Hey Children’s Charity, taking Matalan’s total over five campaigns to an incredible £2.7m.
We are proud to announce the total raised from our annual collaboration and campaign with Matalan. Matalan initially pledged in 2014 to help raise £1.5m for the charity over five years. With the help of last year’s 5th charity campaign ‘Superstars’ raising £623k, the grand total now stands at £2.7m, successfully exceeding the original target.
Money raised over the past four years has already gone towards a new world class research and education building, alongside Alder Hey’s new hospital ‘Alder Hey in the Park’.
The Superstars collaboration included the renowned unisex PJs, as well as a baby grow, bed socks and even pet PJs.
In addition, to mark a special five years, a charity single ‘Reach for the stars’ was also released. As with previous years, 100% of profits from products and song downloads were all donated to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity.
Thanks to another hugely successful year, proceeds from the Superstars campaign will allow Alder Hey to fund a range of activities and projects such as play specialists, ward based chefs and supporting specific research projects; all designed to enhance and improve the lives of young patients. Additionally, funds will also be used to help Alder Hey to buy more specialist medical equipment, which can have a huge impact on treatment for children.
As an extra special thank you to Matalan and to commemorate the first five years of the partnership, Alder Hey had a star named in honour of Matalan and the Hargreaves family. ‘The Matalan Superstar’, was presented to Matalan’s CEO, Jason Hargreaves at a celebratory event which took place at Matalan’s Head office in Knowsley on 26th February 2019. A five pointed star was the emblem on the last campaign’s PJs to symbolise the five years; making this gift from the hospital even more meaningful.
Jason Hargreaves, Matalan CEO said:
"I’m so proud to be celebrating another really special campaign and an unbelievable five years in partnership with Alder Hey.
The campaign and the partnership mean so much to everyone at Matalan, it’s the campaign that everyone anticipates and looks forward to.
The funds raised have a huge impact and it’s amazing to be able to support Alder Hey in this way, enabling them to care for their patients in the best way possible.
I am so proud of everyone who has been involved and supported the campaign and the partnership – together we have contributed towards something truly special.
Matalan will continue to support Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity; a cause that is close to the hearts of Matalan colleagues and our customers."
Hayley Thomas, Acting Head of Corporate Fundraising at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity said:
"We are so grateful to be celebrating the fifth year of our partnership with Matalan which has gone from strength to strength. Our relationship with Matalan means the world to us and to raise £2.7m in those five years is an incredible achievement. The money raised has made a huge difference to us at Alder Hey, helping us build phase two of our research and education building as well as fund life-saving equipment and build a healthier future for children and young people.
We would like to say thank you to Matalan and to everyone who has supported the ‘Superstars’ campaign. It really did catch the imagination of everyone and we had so much fun making the single too. Everyone here is really excited to see what the next campaign will be."
Fauve Syers, mum of campaign ambassador Theo Fry, who has had an incredible 17 heart operations at Alder Hey said:
"It was nice to be able to raise awareness of Alder Hey and to give something back. We spent so long there and it became our lives. Before we had Theo we took so much for granted; having a healthy child, facilities being available if your child is poorly and just how important it is for your child to have the chance to still ‘be a child’. The Matalan campaign means so much and the incredible amount of money raised really does make a huge difference to our experience when we are at Alder Hey and so many other children like Theo. Alder Hey really is different to other hospitals and every penny helps make it even better.
We want to say thank you to Matalan for their amazing support, and for making Theo and all the children feel like superstars."« Return to Latest news
