Michael Owen Signs Up To Support Alder Hey

Michael Owen is running the London Marathon to support Alder HeyMichael Owen today pledged his support to Alder Hey Children’s Charity. On Sunday 13 April Michael will take part in the London Marathon in an effort to raise much needed funds for life saving medical equipment and research at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

The next few months will see Michael complete gruelling training in preparation for the big day.

Michael commented “As a visitor and a parent I have visited Alder Hey many times and absolutely appreciate how important their work is. I have always been moved by the young children who are often very poorly and fighting so hard to get better. At Alder Hey there is always so much laughter and optimism from the children and their parents and that can only be achieved by the incredible professionalism and care of all the staff. They are currently building a brand new hospital, Alder Hey in the Park and I really want to help them raise the necessary funds for this important new facility”.

In October 2013, Alder Hey launched a £30million appeal to help kit out the new hospital which is due to open in 2015. The NHS can afford to build the hospital itself but the charitable appeal allows Alder Hey to incorporate a higher specification of equipment, fund art and play activities and support on-going research. In short it will transform a national children’s hospital into one of the best in the world.

As Europe’s only children’s ‘hospital in a park’, this will bring together excellent care, technology and design to provide the best possible healing environment for children and their families, coupled with first class teaching and research.

Louise Barrett at Alder Hey Children’s Charity said “We were thrilled when Michael contacted us to offer his support. Michael’s support could not have come at a better time as we have embarked on a major Appeal to raise £30m to support the building of the new hospital, Alder Hey in the Park. Every penny donated to the appeal will be used to provide life-saving medical equipment, arts and play activities and funding for vital research. We hope that during the marathon Michael will be spurred on knowing that his fundraising efforts will be helping us achieve our goal”.
