Here you can find out more about the Urology team and their specialties.

The Urologist’s role is to work with patients and their families as part of the Disorders of Sex Development team to help reach a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. Paediatric Urologists are specialists in the management of conditions affecting the genitalia and urinary system in childhood.

The Urologist would be responsible for any exploratory or treatment surgery your child might need.

Miss Fiona McAndrew

Appointed in 2002 as a full time Consultant in Paediatric Urology at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Undergraduate training from King’s College, London, in 1989 and trained at Alder Hey, Southampton, Perth (Western Australia) and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Fiona’s MD was awarded by Liverpool University for her research on bacterial translocation.

She manages the care for children with urological disease; upper and lower tract and genital abnormalities, including about 70 hypospadias surgeries per year. She holds clinic sessions at the paediatric departments at Ormskirk, Leighton, Glan Clwyd and Wrexham hospitals.

Outside work Fiona plays tennis and enjoys keeping fit with general exercise.

Mr Simon Kenny

Simon KennyAppointed in 2003 as a full time Consultant in Paediatric Surgery and Urology and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Child Health, working with developmental biologists at the University of Liverpool.

Undergraduate training the University of Birmingham completed in 1990 with experiences at Monash Medical Centre and the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, and at St Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital, Denver, USA. He is the clinical lead in paediatric minimally invasive general and urological surgery (laparoscopy or keyhole surgery).

Simon also holds clinic sessions at the paediatric departments at St Helens, Bangor and Arrowe Park Hospital

Outside work Simon enjoy’s off road cycling and sailing as well as many other outdoor sports and hobbies.

Qualifications: BSc(Hons) ChB(Hons) MD FRCS(Paed) FAAP

Chair of the Clinical Outcomes Group of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons

Specialisms: Hirschsprung’s disease, splenectomy, cholecystectomy, nephroureterectomy and pyeloplasty. He performs 50-80 hypospadias operations per year and runs a joint Hirschsprung’s clinic with Mr Colin Baillie and Dr Mark Dalzell.

Mr Andrew Baird

Appointed in 2007 as a full time Consultant as Adolescent and Reconstructive Urologist

Graduated from the University of Liverpool Medical School in 1995.  He has worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore MD USA and at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India.

Specialisms: Urology; adolescent urology; urological reconstructive surgery; transitional care

Outside work Andrew  enjoy’s sports and a busy family life, enjoying spending time rambling.

Miss Harriet Corbett

Appointed in 2010 as a full time Consultant

University of Liverpool in 1996 and trained in paediatric surgery and urology in Manchester and at Alder Hey. She also received training in paediatric urology & laparoscopy at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Specialisms: Hypospadias surgery, minimally invasive general and urological surgery (laparoscopy or keyhole surgery), including impalpable testis, nephroureterectomy and pyeloplasty. As well as practicing at Alder Hey, Harriet also holds clinic sessions at the paediatric departments at Whiston and Warrington Hospital.

Outside work Harriet enjoy cycling and swimming.

Sarah Doyle – MSc, APNP, RN (child)

Sarah Doyle Appointed ANP 2007 Diploma from University of Wales in 1999, MSc as an Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner at John Moore’s University in 2007. She won an award to visit the urology service in CHOP (Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia) in 2009.  She is currently completing her PhD.

Specialisms: Bladder augmentation, management urinary tract infections in children, continence care and urological surgeries.

Outside work Sarah enjoys a busy family life and using her bilingual skills of Welsh.

Claire Ferguson – BA(Hons), RN (Child) Clinical Nurse Specialist

Appointed in 2010 from a busy surgical ward to the urology team.  Her undergraduate degree completed 1997, was from JMU.

Specialisms: She has a special interest in adolescent healthcare nurse led clinics for patients requiring urology surgery and also treatments such as, biofeedback and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation.

Outside work Claire enjoys a busy family life and has recently started training for a half marathon.

Linda Hyde – BA Nursing

Appointed 2013; she completed her training in 2005 and graduated from John Moore’s University with a first class BA Hons in children’s nursing.

Specialisms: Continence management and bowel irrigation in children with neuropathic bowel.

Outside of work Linda is busy with twins and enjoys outdoor activities and family fun.

Kate Thompson BSc (Hons) RSCN

Appointed January 2014 and is job sharing with theatre. She graduated from Edge Hill University with a Degree in children’s Nursing in 2010. Kate has worked as a theatre practitioner for four years working primarily with Urology, gastroenterology and cleft palate surgery.

She has a special interest in urology surgery and also treatments such as urodynamics and biofeedback.

Specialism: Will be developing the ambulatory urodynamics service and day care pathways for urology surgery.

Outside work Kate enjoys family life and walking with her two Labradors.

Shirley Sinnott – Urotherapist

Appointed 2006 to join the urology team as a play specialist and with further training secured the urotherapy role in 2014; she completed a Diploma JMU in 1999.

Specialisms: She supports children with dysfunctional voiding and provides bladder retraining programmes and prepares children for urological surgery and procedures. She has developed a special interest in procedural pain and undertook the pain course at John Moore’s University in 2004.

Outside work Shirley is busy with a close family and friends network and enjoys travel.

Registrar and junior doctors

As a teaching hospital we have a group of trainee doctors that are based within each service. These rotate and are integral members of our team.

Ward teams

We work very closely with the wards in the hospital. Most often the urology patients access ward K3 and K1 and is the ward manager for these units is Maureen Arrowesmith.
