Here you can find out more about the Rheumatology team.
Our consultants include:
Dr Eileen Baildam, Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool
I started in Alder Hey in 2006 moving from Manchester Children’s Hospital where I had been a Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist for 13 years. I was attracted by the wonderful team here in a Children’s Trust ambitious to pursue excellence through research into the serious diseases that children with rheumatological disorders have to deal with. I have helped to champion the idea that children have a right to be involved in research into their condition and now the majority of our patients are offered this opportunity, making our centre one of the most research active paediatric rheumatology centres in the UK.
I love the cute daily happenings in Alder Hey such as the 3 year scolding her mother because her toy witches broomstick didn’t actually work when she had planned to fly up our long colourful corridor. The fact that children sometimes cry when they have to leave the hospital because they have actually enjoyed being here defines the quality of care we try to deliver.

Dr Gavin Cleary, Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist
I have been in post as a consultant paediatric rheumatologist since January 2003. I feel extremely proud to work at Alder Hey working as I do with patients, families and also colleagues from so many different teams and disciplines including specialist nurses and physiotherapists.
I have interest and expertise in all areas of inflammatory rheumatological conditions. In addition my training as a general paediatrician is also very valuable when diagnosing and treating non inflammatory conditions such as chronic pain which is another specific interest of mine.
There is a growing research interest within the team which I am actively involved with.

I started as a consultant at Alder Hey in 2012 and have enjoyed my first few years here immensely. This is because I have the chance to work within a caring and professional team who have the best interests of children and families at heart. The team are active within research and I love the mix of clinical and research work which allows us to improve outcomes for children with rheumatological conditions.
