General Surgery

placeholder2The Surgical Department at Alder Hey offers treatment for infants, children and adolescents for conditions which may require an operation. Our team of Consultant Surgeons and Junior Doctors treat both general and specialist paediatric surgical conditions.

Children’s General Surgery

The Department caters for children who require surgery for conditions such as hernias, undescended testis, foreskin problems and skin and soft tissue swellings, from Liverpool and the surrounding area. Several outpatients’ clinics are performed at Alder Hey, and at district hospitals together with local Paediatric colleagues. We visit the following hospitals:

  • Blackpool Teaching Hospital
  • Stoke
  • Chester
  • Arrowe Park
  • Warrington
  • Leighton
  • Wrexham
  • Glan Clywd
  • Ormskirk
  • Shrewsbury
  • Preston
  • Bangor

Children’s Specialist Surgery

We also provide treatment for the full range of surgical conditions, with the exclusion of transplant surgery. Our specialist services include:

  • Surgery for chest and lung problems
  • Surgery for feeding problems and gastroesophageal reflux
  • Surgery for gall bladder and some liver problems
  • Surgery for bowel problems
  • Minimally invasive (‘keyhole’) surgery
  • Children’s cancer (oncology) surgery
  • Surgery to provide long-term venous access
  • Newborn surgery.

We are proud of our dedicated Neonatal Surgical Unit, one of only five in the country. In this unit our highly trained nurses provide specialised care for newborn babies requiring surgery and vital support for their families.

You may also meet us in the hospital as we support the work of our other specialist colleagues, for example in Cardiac and Neurosurgery, Oncology and Gastroenterology.

  • Just rang secretary’s to try and get an email address for consultant as wanted to raise some issues. Didn’t speak to the secretary I needed as she was on lunch the one I spoke to was quite abrupt and tried to get me off the phone and made me feel as if I was being obsurd for even asking for an email address!!! I have emailed consultants at different hospitals before and never had a problem. I will now just write in ont have a problem with not getting the email address just don’t like condsending secretary’s attitudes!!

And just to add I’ve always found the medical staff at the hospital to be very accommodating

  • When I was 2 days old, I was transferred to Alder Hey from Whiston due to a suspected twisted bowel.

After an X-Ray, I needed exploratory surgery to find out exactly what was wrong.

It turns out, I was suffering from Necrotising Entercolitis – very rare in full term babies like me.

    My surgeon was fantastic.

    He saved my life.

I had stomas fitted to allow my bowel to rest. Some of the nurses were really kind, I like it when Paula looked after me, she took the time to get to know me and my night time routine.

After 4 months, my stomas were reversed by Sarah Almond and her team (Nick and Will were the other surgeons who operated on me)

My surgery took 5 and half hours…

My mummy & daddy are so pleased with what these 3 surgeons did for me.

Dr Ba’ath saved my life. Sarah and her team gave me the chance to have a normal childhood.

    Thank you.

  • On the 10/09/1998 at just 1 day old I was admitted here with a hole in my diaphragm and a diaphragmatic hernia. at 2 days old I was operated on by Mr or Dr Losty and his team. if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here today. The nurses and all the people who cared for me in the two/three weeks I spend there I owe them my life. I’m very grateful for everything they all did. of course this is nearly 18 years ago however, I would one day like to say thankyou in person. Amazing and incredible hospital and it’s thanks to everyone there I’m here today and able to write this message!!

  • RE: MATTHEUS:
On behalf of my family, I would like to thank Mr Leroy James for his excellent attention to my grandson on Wednesday.

He was most kind and extremely thorough, giving us all great confidence in his abilities.

Please ensure that the Chief Executive is informed, and that she ensures our commendations are forwarded to the Doctor.

  • My daughter had bowel surgery after being diagnosed with Crohns disease. The team of surgeons under Dr Bailey were fantastic and dedicated especially Dr Jenny who stayed with us after a shift when Amy was at a low point. Thank you so very much and it meant so much to Amy.

The nurses and the entire team on M3 a huge thank you you work incredibly hard and made her stay that was longer than planned and away from her family as comfortable sd she could be. The support to me as her Mum was informative caring and gave me confidence in the team looking after Amy and could not have asked for more.

  • My daughter has been treated at Alder Hey Hospital, after having a colostomy. Dr Bailey and his team couldn’t have been more helpful, thank you.

  • My Son has been treated at Alder Hey from being a baby and continues to be today. He has had various admissions, day case surgeries and major surgeries under Mr Baillie and his team. They are amazing, my Son couldn’t be in better care than he is at Alder Hey they are second to none, right from the HCA’s on the ward up to his consultant, can’t fault them one bit. If your child is going into Alder Hey for surgery they couldn’t be in better hands.
