Amazing Grace Sings Her Heart Out For Alder Hey – With A Little Help From A Shop Direct Flash Mob

Amazing Grace performs Lean on Me for Alder HeyShop Direct, the UK’s leading multi-brand online retailer has joined forces with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital today to entertain Liverpool shoppers and make a little girl’s dreams come true.

Over 800 unsuspecting Shop Direct colleagues completed a charity challenge as part of their annual conference, raising much-needed funds and awareness for the Alder Hey appeal. Totally unaware of the task that awaited them, colleagues believed they would be spending 30 minutes learning more about the work of Alder Hey. Instead, multi-award winning vocal group, Sense of Sound, helped groups of colleagues to learn the Bill Withers classic, ‘Lean on Me.’

With just one rehearsal together, colleagues then made their way to Liverpool ONE for the never to be forgotten, flash mob performance.

The 800 were joined by an extra special guest, nine-year old Grace Lee. Grace was born with a serious and incurable form of congenital heart disease. She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Alder Hey and had emergency open heart surgery shortly after she was born. Since then Grace, together with her family, has travelled many times from her home on the Isle of Man to have treatment at Alder Hey. Stays have sometimes lasted months and Grace has had countless operations, including two further heart surgeries.

Despite everything she has gone through, Grace’s family have been keen for her to have as normal life as possible and encourage her to follow her dreams – just like her friends. The youngster is a talented singer and wanted to use this gift to help raise money and awareness for Alder Hey’s appeal.

Jacqui Humphries, group people director at Shop Direct, said: “Alder Hey has been a long-term charity partner of ours, so we were delighted to be able to raise much-needed funds and awareness for their charity appeal. Although they were a little surprised at first, colleagues soon entered into the spirit of the day and they certainly gave a memorable performance! We were honoured to be joined by Grace who absolutely stole the show with her stunning voice.”

Grace’s mum Kara explained: “The last eight years have been like a rollercoaster and there have been some really dark days and nights along the way. There have been times when we have feared losing her and we feel so blessed that our amazing Grace is doing so well. I spent so many hours staring at my tiny baby clinging onto life hoping and praying that one day she would come home and grow and enjoy life. She is now doing just that and I’m so proud when I hear her singing so well. Grace being given the chance to sing in front of so many people is a dream come true for all of us! Thank you Alder Hey and Shop Direct!”

Grace said: “I was really happy to be asked to sing in Liverpool ONE and I’m really excited. I hope everyone likes hearing me sing and hopefully I can raise lots of money for Alder Hey.”

Clare White, director of Alder Hey Children’s Charity, said: “Grace is an amazing little girl who really wanted to support our new hospital appeal in the best way that she can. We were delighted that Shop Direct was able to help make her dream could true and would like to thank all their staff for taking part in such a memorable performance.”

The Shop Direct flash mob choir was joined for the one-off performance by Alder Hey’s fantastic staff choir.
