Word on the Ward
Our Word on the Ward project launched in 2014 and sets out to use storytelling and reading to improve children and young people’s experiences whilst they are in hospital.
Word on the Ward is a collaborative project with support from other partners including Liverpool City Libraries, Blackwell’s Bookshop, Littlewoods and Alder Hey Children’s Charity. Local children’s author Hilary Keating has also trained staff and volunteers in the art of storytelling.
As part of the Word on the Ward project, patients and members of Alder Hey’s Children and Young Peoples Forum have also reviewed children’s books about health conditions.
We will be publishing reviews regularly.
I Have Asthma, reviewed by Bradley, aged 9
I have Asthma, ISBN13-978-0-7641-3758-3, Barrons
What was the book about?
A boy telling the story a but having an asthma attack when playing soccer.
What I liked about the book.
I liked the way it help young readers learn about the meaning of having asthma and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
What I did not like about the book
The diagrams on page 13 because they are not very clear.
I think this book would help children and young people understand asthma and it will help adults with asthma too. I would recommend this book because I think it will help a child with asthma and also with other allergies.
