The Paediatric Oncology Unit at Alder Hey is the first Multi Integrated Cancer Centre in the country. It comprises of a Clinic and Day care department, Inpatient area for children under 13, and a designated Adolescent unit.
The total capacity consists of 13 inpatient beds and four day case beds, 2 of which are housed on the teenage unit. The unit has the capacity to expand to a maximum of 20 beds. There are two designated Transplant suites where heap filtration allows for bone marrow and stem cell re-infusions. There are also four cubicles allowing for more privacy.
The Unit has a huge catchment area for patients from Merseyside and the North West to the Isle of Man, North Wales, and up as far as parts of Lancashire and Cheshire.
We treat children with cancer up to 18 years of age and see up to 150 new patients per year. As new and more intense treatment schedules are designed, the care for our children is becoming much more technical and complicated, with the benefit that outcomes are improving.
