2010-2011: A Year of Progress, Innovation, Quality and World Class Care

Louise Shepherd Chief ExecutiveChief Executive Louise Shepherd believes that the last twelve months at Alder Hey have seen fantastic advancements in innovation, quality and world class care.

Speaking at the Annual Members Meeting, Louise highlighted just some of the Trust’s achievements that have taken place.

Louise said: “The expectations placed on us are increasing every year. We have had to make changes to our own organisation in the form of Clinical Business Units (CBUs). This new structure puts clinicians at the heart of decision making. There are now about 35 clinicians at the forefront of our decisions. There have also been new appointments to our Board including our new Medical Director, Chief Operating Officer, Director of Nursing and Chair.

“Our Children’s Health Park project has taken great steps forward. We have been working with two bidders, Acorn and Balfour Beatty, on their designs for many months. Both proposals are fantastic and our new hospital will definitely be leading edge. We have worked really hard to develop a new PFI model where we will put a huge down payment (deposit) into the new hospital. This will be around £35m which will be generated from our surpluses. This is a clear demonstration that we can afford to deliver our new hospital. We have also agreed the land-swap with Liverpool City Council and will work in partnership with them to make the Children’s Health Park a reality.

Our promise: Listen to our children and young people...

“We are extremely proud to be an Investing in Children’s Hospital and many of our services are now aiming to be individually accredited. We have worked really hard over the past couple of years to develop new ways of listening and engaging with our children. Listening to our patients has led to us providing better food, a family zone in our restaurant, better access to the Internet and more arts, dance and sport activities. We are also pleased to be working with Unicef UK to develop a model of care for children and young people.”

Our promise: Deliver outstanding standards of care...

“This is so important and our achievements in this area illustrate the hard work that has taken place, particularly in reducing infections. The impact of our 3-T intra-operative MRI scanner in reducing repeat surgery has been dramatic. Our scanner enables us to scan while the patient is still in theatre to ensure that the entire tumour is removed and repeat surgery is not necessary. We are the only hospital in the country who can offer this service. We have also focused on improving end-of-life support for our children and young people.”

Our promise: Provide leading edge care and leading edge research...

“Both of these go hand in hand and we have therefore invested heavily in our Paediatrics Medicines Research Unit. Our Clinical Research Facility has just opened its doors and we will be building on this in the future. We have also received a £2m NIHR grant for Type 1 Diabetes.”

Our promise: Be endorsed by our regulators...

“We retained NHSLA Level 3 – the highest possible rating for clinical risk management, demonstrating our processes are operating to the highest standards of safety. We remain registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) without conditions. Our overall regulator, Monitor, rated us as one of the top eight foundation trusts in the country.”
