2012 Board Meetings

All Board meetings will commence at 10.00am and will be held in the Boardroom

28th May

The Board of Directors will be undertaking a short business meeting on Tuesday 3rd July from 10.00 – 11.00am which will be open to the public.

4th September

The Board of Directors will be undertaking a short business meeting on Tuesday 2nd October from 10.00 – 11.00am which will be open to the public.

6th November

The Board of Directors will be undertaking a short business meeting on Tuesday 4th December from 10.00 – 11.00am which will be open to the public.

 

Sir David Henshaw - Chair

Sir David Henshaw became Chair of Alder Hey in February 2011.

Prior to his role at Alder Hey, Sir David was Chair of NHS North West for four years. Amongst his many achievements, he was responsible for the review of the child support system in the UK in 2007. He was also involved in the Prime Ministers Delivery Unit Capability Review programme of central government departments.

Alongside his valuable experience within the health arena, Sir David has worked in local government for most of his career. He spent ten years at Knowsley Borough Council before spending seven years as Chief Executive of Liverpool City Council. Today Merseyside residents see and are enjoying the benefits from many of the regeneration initiatives his team brought to the region, including securing the award of Capital of Culture.

Sir David was born and grew up in Liverpool with a lifelong commitment to public service for the city and region. His outstanding track record in the public sector of delivering the highest quality of services and major capital developments will be pivotal in ensuring that Alder Hey achieves its vision in delivering the new Children's Health Park in 2015.

Alongside his role at Alder Hey, Sir David is also a Non Executive Director for a number of other public and private organisations including the Chair of Manchester Academy for Health Sciences and Non Executive Director for Albany Investment PLC.

Louise Shepherd MBA MA CPFA – Chief ExecutiveLouise Shepherd photo

Louise joined Alder Hey on 10th March 2008 from Liverpool Women’s NHS Trust where as Chief Executive she led it to Foundation Trust status, the first in Merseyside. Formerly deputy Chief Executive and finance Director at the Countess of Chester NHS Trust for five and a half years Louise first joined the health service in 1993 as Director of business development at Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull

NHS Trust. 

 

A Cambridge University graduate in 1985 Louise trained as an accountant in local government before spending four years with KPMG in Birmingham as a financial and management consultant to the public sector.

 

Louise is very active in Liverpool outside of the health service, in particular as vice chair of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society.

Professor Ian Lewis – Medical Director

Professor Ian Lewis joined Alder Hey as Medical Director in March 2011. This is a return journey for Professor Lewis as he worked at Alder Hey during his Registrar rotations (1978-1985). He has been a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist in Leeds since 1985.

 

Professor Lewis has undertaken a number of senior management and leadership roles including Deputy medical Director, children's Services and Obstetrics (1998-2004) with a secondment to the SHA as Associate Medical Director (Children's Strategy 2004-2006). he has a number of National roles and responsibilities including being a Member of the DH Payment by Results, Clinical Advisory Group. He is a member of the National Clinical Advisory Team, advising on and chairing several complex organizational and service reconfigurations.

 

Ian remains active in clinical research, particularly clinical trials and health services research and he has a national and international reputation within paediatric and adolescent oncology. he is currently leading a European Work Package aimed at developing an expert Teenage and Young Adult Oncology network throughout Europe and continues to advise on service developments in the USA, Canada and Australia. Externally, Professor Lewis is a trustee of three charities related to his work.

Sue Thoms – Director of Business Development

Sue joined Alder Hey as Director of Business Development in January 2010. She has worked in health care for the last 20 years for several private sector organisations.  

Her most recent role was head of local marketing for UK Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and was a founder member of Pfizer’s Innovation Board. She has also worked for BUPA, Astra Zeneca and the Co-op in business development or marketing roles. In her early career she worked in Australia for Wal-Mart chain as a store manager for Big W. During her career in the pharmaceutical industry she won several awards these including Change Management and Marketing Team of the Year for the industry [PMEA 2009]. She graduated from Sheffield with a BSc. Hons. in Marketing; she also completed her post graduate degree in Marketing and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Erica Saunders – Director of Corporate AffairsErica Saunders Director of Corporate Affairs

 

Erica joined the Alder Hey team in September 2010 as Director of Corporate Affairs. Erica was born and raised in Liverpool and has been working in the NHS since 1991. Part of her job includes advising and supporting the Chair, Board of Directors and Council of Governors on all aspects of regulation and corporate governance. Erica also supports the Trust’s membership activities and believes that our 14,500 members have a vital role to play at Alder Hey. Previous to her current role Erica was Director of Corporate Affairs at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital where she was proud to have been involved with the development and delivery of Clinical Business Units. Erica is in the final stages of study to become a chartered company secretary.

Sue Lorimer – Director of Finance and Commissioning

 

Sue joined Alder Hey on 2nd February 2009 as Director of Finance and Sue Lorimer photoCommissioning and is a member of the Association of Chartered Management Accountants. Sue came to Alder Hey from Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust and has held a number of finance director roles within the NHS including six years at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology and two years at Cheshire and Wirral Partnership, both now foundation trusts. She is a Trustee and Director of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and a trustee of the Fiveways Trust, a schools’ trust comprising Childwall Sports College and Broadgreen International School.

Judith Adams – Chief Operating Officer

Jude joined Alder Hey as Chief Operating Officer in March 2011 and has over 25 years working in the health service. Jude trained as a nurse and has clinical experience working in Specialist and University Teaching Trusts both inside and outside of London as well as overseas. She moved into healthcare management in 2002 when she applied through the DH for a national advisory role in the Heart Choice programme and worked with the Picker Institute in evaluating patient choice.

 

Jude has held a senior post at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen NHS Trust as Divisional Nurse Director for Surgical Services and later becoming Divisional General Manager for this Division. Previous to her role at Alder Hey, Jude was the Director of Operations and Programme Director at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust where she lead the Trust on a £48m Cost Improvement Plan over three years, as well as leading significant transformation across a number of clinical services.

Lorraine Dodd - Vice Chair

Lorraine was appointed Non-Executive Director in May 2000, reappointed for 4 years in December 2002 and again in November 2006.  Lorraine is an Investment Director with Rathbone Investment Management and has over 30 years experience managing investments on behalf of private clients, trusts and charities, particularly in the area of ethical and socially responsible investment through Rathbone Greenbank Investments.  She is also a Trustee of the Rathbone 1987 Pension Fund Scheme and a trustee of a number of local charities involved in health related matters, education and the environment.

Ed Oliver - Non-Executive Director

Ed was appointed Non-Executive Director November 2006. Ed was also the Centre Manager of the Clayton Square Shopping Centre in Liverpool until his retirement at the end of August. Prior to this, his career was in the retail sector for 28 years. Ed is immediate past Chairman of Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Trustee and Chair of the Ronald McDonald Family House at Alder Hey, Board member of Merseyside Tourism and Board member of City Centre Business Improvement District

Susan Sellers – Senior Independent Director Susan Sellers photo

 

Susan was born in Liverpool and following a 5 year short service commission in the Women’s Royal Air Force, has held a number of management positions in both the public and private sectors. She previously spent 12 years in the NHS, firstly as a non-executive director of South Cheshire Health Authority followed by seven years as Chairman of the Countess of Chester Hospital. 

Whilst working in the NHS, Susan served on the influential interim board of the Foundation Trust Network and their Governance working group. Her professional achievements were recognised with her nomination for ‘Cheshire Woman of the Year’ for 2005.
 
Most recently she undertook a 3 year appointment as National Chairman of NADFAS, retiring in May 2009 .

Steve Igoe - Non Executive Director

Steve is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Resources) of Edge Hill University and a Chartered Accountant by training. Prior to that he worked for Coopers and Lybrand Deloitte a predecessor firm of Pricewaterhousecoopers as a Senior Manager in their North West offices. In his current role he has Board responsibility for Finance, IT, HR, Infrastructure developments and Facilities Management.

 

He has advised the Government on the regulation of the Higher education sector and is an adviser to the HEFCE Board on leadership, governance and management within the University Sector.

Steve has been a Governor of a large acute NHS trust, a trustee of a charity specialising in respiratory education and an executive and founding director of a substantial IT network company.

Phil HuggonNon Executive Director Phil Huggan photo

Philip has a portfolio of non executive and trustee roles in the private and public sector, with a particular focus on marketing and business development. He has 10 years board director experience including NHS Manchester Primary Care Trust and is currently a board director with the Business Continuity Institute, Sports Leaders UK and chair of RCU, an education consultancy. His background is mostly marketing, strategy and change management gained from 20 years experience with Shell and before that, with MARS and BP, both in the UK and overseas.

Ian Quinlan - Non Executive DirectorIan Quinlan

Ian QuinIan was born and bred in Yorkshire and began his career as an auditor with Ernst and Whinney (now Ernst and Young) in 1982, becoming the youngest partner in the firm at that time. In 1988 he became Group Finance Director of the Albert Fisher Group Plc, a leading global processor and distributor. His achievements during this time included building the company’s business in the USA to a value of

From 2009 to the present time, Ian has held senior positions with VPS Holdings Limited, the most profitable and fastest growing void property services company in the world. Between 2009 and the beginning of 2011 he was Group Chief Executive, during which time he increased the value of the business from $30m to £150m. In January this year he took on the role of Deputy Chairman with responsibility for company strategy, business development and acquisitions.
